Meet Jimmy
Jimmy Anderson is a veteran, public servant, and national security leader dedicated to strengthening support for military families and expanding opportunity for all. He currently serves as Deputy Secretary of the Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families, where he oversees statewide programs supporting veterans, service members, and their families.
Jimmy’s commitment to service was instilled early. Inspired by his grandfather’s service in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and guided by parents who emphasized hard work and community, he learned that service and opportunity can change lives. That belief continues to drive his work today.
He began his military career as an enlisted Airman in aircraft maintenance before earning a commission as an Intelligence Officer in the United States Air Force. Over more than 15 years on active duty and in the reserve, Jimmy has served in key intelligence roles across the globe, including a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He continues to serve in the Air Force Reserve at Headquarters Air Force, where he has worked on strategic cyber and intelligence operations.
Jimmy has also served at the highest levels of government. As Senior Advisor for Veterans and Military Family Engagement at the White House under President Joe Biden, he led national outreach efforts and helped advance the historic PACT Act to expand healthcare and benefits for veterans. He previously served at the Department of Veterans Affairs, where he worked to improve coordination across agencies and modernize services for veterans.
In the private sector, Jimmy was an Associate Partner at IBM Consulting, where he led strategy and innovation initiatives focused on improving government services, healthcare systems, and workforce development. His work helped deliver real results for veterans and their families while building partnerships between the public and private sectors.
A Fulbright Scholar and national security fellow, Jimmy has worked with leading policy organizations including the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for a New American Security, and the Truman National Security Project. He holds degrees from Queen’s University, American University, and the University of South Carolina.
Jimmy is proud to call Maryland home. He lives in Montgomery County with his wife and children and remains committed to building a stronger, more supportive future for every Maryland family.
